Is agave spirit the same thing as tequila?
Not exactly — but they’re close.
Both tequila and agave spirit come from the agave plant, but tequila is a specific type of agave spirit made under strict rules. Think of tequila like Champagne: it’s a protected term tied to geography and method. Agave spirit, on the other hand, is a broader category that gives distillers more creative freedom.

What’s the difference between tequila and agave spirit?
The biggest differences come down to where it’s made and how it’s regulated:
- – Tequila must be made in specific regions of Mexico (mainly Jalisco) using at least 51% Blue Weber agave.
- – Agave spirit can be made anywhere, with any variety of agave, and without the same legal constraints.
Agave spirits often offer more variety in flavor because distillers aren’t bound by the same rules as tequila producers.
Why can’t tequila be made outside of Mexico?
Because “Tequila” is a protected designation of origin (PDO) — just like Champagne or Parmigiano-Reggiano.
Mexico owns the rights to the name, and only spirits made in approved regions and following strict guidelines can legally carry the tequila label.
If it’s made outside of Mexico (even from the same agave plant), it’s not tequila — it’s agave spirit.

Is agave spirit used in margaritas too, or just tequila?
Absolutely.
While tequila is traditional, agave spirit makes a fantastic margarita — often with even more character and depth.
At Reformation, we use our house-made agave spirit in our new Skinny Margarita, and it’s a hit for folks looking for something bright, balanced, and a little lighter.
How is a traditional margarita different from a skinny one?
The key difference is in the ingredients — and the calories.
- – A traditional margarita usually includes tequila, orange liqueur (like triple sec or Cointreau), lime juice, and often a sugar-heavy sour mix.
- – A skinny margarita skips the liqueur and sugary mixes. It sticks to fresh lime juice, a little simple syrup or agave nectar, and spirit.
The result? A cleaner taste, fewer calories, and less sugar — without losing the refreshing citrusy punch.

Is a skinny margarita actually healthier, or just hype?
It depends on your definition of healthy — but for many, yes.
- – Lower sugar
- – Fewer artificial ingredients
Our Skinny Margarita at Reformation is low in sugar, high in flavor, and 10% ABV, making it a great option if you want something lighter but still bold.
